trying to figure out what kind of pump this is, is it a gear pump or something else?

It’s an external gear pump in the Eaton Char-Lynn Series 26 family, meant for fixed displacement hydraulic applications.

pump says it's field reversible, what does that actually mean for someone swapping it into an existing setup?

Rotation direction on this pump can be changed without pulling special parts or sending it back anywhere. If your circuit runs clockwise and you need counterclockwise, or the other way around, you can make that switch in the field. That's useful when you're fitting it into a machine where the original pump ran a different direction, saves you from hunting down a separate model just to match rotation.
