does this pump work in cold weather or is it gonna have issues starting up in freezing temps?

Cold-weather operation is built into this unit. The minimum working temperature is rated at -20°C, so running it in freezing conditions falls well within spec. You shouldn't have trouble getting it going in a cold barn or out on a frost-covered field first thing in the morning.
