pump says it's field reversible, how hard is that to actually do, and do you need special tools for it?

Reversing the pump direction on a Series 26 unit is meant to be done in the field without sending it back or swapping it out entirely. The design accounts for it, so you're not fighting the hardware to make it happen. No exotic tooling required under normal circumstances. It's one of the more practical features on this pump, especially when you're dealing with installations where the drive rotation doesn't match what you originally planned for.

Will this gear pump work okay in cold weather, like down around -20C?
