pump says it's field reversible, what does that actually mean for somebody swapping it onto a piece of equipment that was running the opposite rotation?

Rotation direction on gear pumps matters because the internal gearing and porting are set up to move fluid a specific way. Field reversible means you can change the pump's direction of rotation on the job without sending it back or ordering a different unit. That kind of flexibility is real useful when you're fitting it to a replacement application that runs the drive shaft the other way, or reconfiguring a piece of equipment mid-season. No extra parts needed to make the swap.
