pump says it's field reversible - how hard is that to actually do out in the shop without sending it back somewhere?

Reversing the pump direction is something you can handle on-site without shipping it out. That's the whole point of the field reversible design. It's built to let you make that change yourself rather than dealing with a service depot, which saves real time when you're in the middle of a job.
