pump says field reversible -- does that mean I can swap the rotation direction myself without sending it back or buying a different unit?

That's what it means. The Series L2 is set up so you can change the rotation direction out in the field without having to swap out the whole pump or send it anywhere. Handy when you're setting up a new circuit or retrofitting older equipment that runs the opposite direction from what you originally planned.
