pump says it's field reversible, how hard is that to actually do out in the field, or is it more of a shop job?

Reversing the rotation on this pump is meant to be done without specialized equipment, so a competent mechanic can handle it without pulling it back to a shop. The Series L2 is built with that flexibility in mind, which makes it practical for situations where you need to reconfigure the flow direction on-site rather than waiting on a rebuild.
