Got a fitting that's 7/8-14 JIC on one end and need to tie into a 1/2-14 pipe thread, does this elbow cross those two thread types?

Yeah, that's exactly what this one does. One end is a male JIC SAE 37-degree flare at 7/8-14, and the other is a male NPTF at 1/2-14. The JIC side meets SAE J514 and the NPTF side meets SAE J476, so you're covered on both ends for those thread standards. The 45-degree angle makes it handy when a straight adapter won't clear your routing.

trying to hook a JIC line into an NPT port with a little bend, is this the right kind of fitting?

For that setup, this adapter gives you a 45 degree elbow with a male JIC SAE 37 degree flare on one end and a male NPTF on the other. The JIC side is built to SAE J514 and the NPTF side follows SAE J476, so it matches the common flare to pipe-thread connection style.
