both ends on this thing are male JIC 37-degree flare - so what exactly does it connect, two female JIC fittings on a hydraulic line?

Correct setup. Both ends carry male JIC SAE 37-degree flare threads, so you'd be threading each end into a female JIC fitting on either side of the connection. It's a reducer-style straight adapter, stepping down from a 1-1/16-12 thread on one end to a 3/4-16 on the other. That makes it useful when two lines or ports need to tie together but aren't the same thread size. Both ends conform to SAE J514, so compatibility with standard JIC hydraulic components is built in.

got a hose end that’s 1-1/16-12 JIC, and the other side needs to be 3/4-16 JIC. is this the straight adapter for that?
