Does this cylinder need any kind of check valve or calibration setup when you put it in?

No check valve or calibration is needed with this unit. It runs without those extra components, which keeps the install pretty clean and straightforward. No thread sealant, no battery, no machine mounting either, so there's not a whole lot standing between you and getting it running.
