got a line with a 45 degree flare on both sides. is this the straight union that ties two male ends together?

Correct on both counts. Each end is SAE 45 degree male, half-inch, and the connection runs straight through with no size change between the two ends. So if you're joining two half-inch SAE 45 female fittings in a line, this is the one you want.
