got a hose with a 3/4 ORB male on one end and a 1/2 JIC 37 on the other. is this the straight adapter for that?

Function-wise, yes. It is a straight male to male adapter with an SAE O-ring boss (ORB) male on one end and an SAE 37 degree flare (JIC) male on the other, in 0.75 and 0.5 end sizes.

what's the thread size difference between the two ends on this fitting? trying to connect a 3/4 ORB port to a 1/2 inch JIC line and want to make sure this is the right one before I order.

That's exactly what this adapter is built for. One end is 3/4 inch SAE O-ring Boss (male) and the other is 1/2 inch SAE 37 degree flare (male), so if you've got a 3/4 ORB port on one side and a 1/2 inch JIC fitting or line on the other, this straight adapter connects them without any intermediate pieces.
