what's the difference between NPTF and NPSM on this thing, and does it matter which end goes where when I'm putting it in?

Both ends on this adapter are male, but they use different thread standards. NPTF threads are tapered and form a pressure-tight mechanical seal on their own when tightened correctly, which is why they're common in hydraulic and pneumatic lines where you can't afford a weep. The NPSM end uses straight threads and typically relies on a mating fitting or sealant to hold pressure. Neither end is interchangeable with the other, so orientation matters depending on what you're connecting to. Match the NPTF end to a female NPTF port and the NPSM end to its corresponding female NPSM fitting and you'll have a proper connection on both sides.
