Hey, will this fit where a Char-Lynn C1MH80 motor used to be?

Application-wise, yes, this 2000 Series motor is often found in swing motors and harvesting equipment. The 2-bolt SAE B mounting flange should line up, but confirm your shaft is a 1" 6B spline.

got a swing motor application running about 9.6 cubic inches per rev -- does this unit need a case drain line hooked up or can it run without one?

Without a case drain, the motor handles up to 2000 PSI of back pressure just fine. Once you're running continuous back pressure above that threshold, you'll need to add an external case drain line. When you do run that line, make sure it's routed so the motor case stays full of fluid at all times. For most swing motor setups staying under 2000 PSI continuously, no drain line is required.
