does this fitting work for general hydraulic lines, or is it meant for something more specialized?

General purpose low and medium pressure hydraulic systems are exactly what this fitting is built for. The female ORS swivel end with a 90 degree elbow makes it a solid pick when you need to change direction in a hose assembly without fighting a rigid connection. Just keep in mind that if your application involves shock hazards, you'd want to look at the H277 or H435 hose options instead of running this one there.
