does this fitting work for general hydraulic lines, or is it more of a specialty item?

General purpose hydraulic use is exactly what the 1A6BT6 is built for, covering low and medium pressure applications. It uses a BSPT male tapered thread on one end and connects to a hose or line on the other. One thing worth knowing up front is that if your system sees shock loads or pressure spikes, Aeroquip recommends going with their H277 or H435 series instead of this one.
