what kind of corrosion protection does this fitting have on it?

Carbon steel fittings can be a real weak point in harsh environments, but Aeroquip put a Dura-Kote plating on this one specifically to push back against corrosion. It's part of how the 1A series is built to hold up longer in service and keep hose assemblies running without constant attention.

It is designed to connect to JIS/BSPP female swivel fittings.

trying to replace a small hose end, is this the one for a -4 hose and a 1/4 JIS end?

The key callouts on this part are Hose Dash Size -4 and End Type 1 listed as JIS with End Size 1 at 0.25. It is a fitting assembly with a female end on that side.
