fitting's made of carbon steel right? does it have any kind of coating on it or is it bare metal going into whatever environment i throw it at?

Carbon steel is the base material, and it comes with Dura-Kote plating already applied. That coating is there specifically to fight corrosion, so you're not working with bare metal. For general-purpose low and medium pressure hydraulic work, that combination holds up well over time and helps extend the life of the hose assembly it's connected to.
