motor's rated for 985 newton metres of torque -- is that enough grunt to run a scissor lift without straining the hydraulic system?

For scissor lift applications, 985 Nm is a solid torque figure and lines up well with what those machines typically demand. The low-speed Geroler design actually helps here because it keeps pressure drop lower than most competing motors, which means less strain on the overall system to produce that output.
