trying to make a clean 90 degree turn on a hydraulic line, is this the fitting for that?

For a right angle connection, this elbow is meant to give you a 90 degree turn using a 1/2 inch compression end on one side and a 1/2 inch male pipe thread (MPT) on the other, which helps keep the connection secure and cut down on leaks.

fitting's got a 1/2 inch compression on one end and 1/2 inch male pipe thread on the other, that right? just want to make sure before i order a handful of these

Correct on both counts. The compression side is 1/2 inch and the male pipe thread end is also 1/2 inch, so the two connections are the same size. That 90-degree turn makes it useful anywhere you need to change direction in a line without a lot of extra fittings in between. Midland Industries makes these to pretty tight tolerances, so you should get a clean, low-leakage connection when everything's properly seated.
