Match it up by the supplier part number. This flange plug is Brennan Industries part 1724-24 in the 1724 series, so anything labeled 1724-24 is the same item.

what exactly is a flange plug used for in a hydraulic system, and is this the kind of thing you'd use to cap off an unused port?

Capping unused or inactive ports is exactly the job here. The 1724-24 is a 24 O-Ring Face Flange plug, which means it seals against the flat face of a flange port using an O-ring. That gives you a clean, leak-resistant closure on any open SAE O-ring face seal flange connection you're not actively running a line through. Pretty common need in heavy-duty industrial setups where ports get blocked off during reconfiguration or when a circuit isn't in use yet.
