One end carries a female M42 x 2.0 DIN tube connection and the other end is a male M36 x 2.0 DIN tube connection. So the larger female end accepts the M42 tube and the smaller male end goes into the M36 port. Both sides run a 2.0mm thread pitch, which keeps the connection straightforward once you know which line is which.
