What exactly does a dash pot do in a hydraulic setup? Never worked with one before and trying to get my head around it.

When a hydraulic system stops or shifts direction, things can jerk or slam if there's nothing to slow that movement down gradually. A dash pot handles that by providing controlled resistance during deceleration, so the slowdown happens smooth instead of abrupt. It keeps wear on connected components lower and makes the whole system feel more controlled in operation.
