What exactly does this part do in a piston pump setup?

The valve plate sits inside the piston pump and controls the flow of hydraulic fluid in and out of the cylinder block as it rotates. It's one of those components that takes a beating over time, and when it wears out, pump efficiency drops off pretty quick. Replacing it with the correct plate gets the pump back to moving fluid the way it should.
