Product Questions & Answers

i keep seeing “1-5/8 x 12 straight tap” on the shop order, what exactly is that on this Permco part?
Question by: Terry B on Jun 6, 2025, 5:58 PM
Straight tap refers to a straight threaded tap, and the 1-5/8 x 12 callout is the thread size, 1-5/8 inch diameter with 12 threads per inch. In plain terms, it is a Permco tap made to cut that specific straight thread.

So, this is just a tap, right? Not the whole shebang?

Correct. This is just the PERMCO 1-5/8 X 12 STRAIGHT TAP.

what exactly is a "straight tap" on a pump shaft, and is that what I need if I'm bolting up a PTO-driven setup?
Question by: Stan L on Jun 25, 2025, 7:43 PM
A straight tap shaft means the shaft end is machined with a straight (non-tapered) profile and has a tapped hole for a retaining bolt or coupling fastener, rather than using a keyed or splined connection on its own. For PTO-driven setups, straight tap configurations are pretty common when the mating coupler is bored straight and secured with a through-bolt or cap screw at the shaft end. The 1-5/8 inch diameter on this Permco shaft puts it in a range used frequently on mid-to-larger displacement gear pumps. Whether it fits your specific PTO coupler comes down to your coupler's bore size matching that 1-5/8 inch dimension and the bolt pattern or tap size lining up with your fastener.
