what exactly is a straight tap, and is that different from some of the other port styles out there?

A straight tap port uses parallel threads rather than tapered ones. With tapered threads, the seal forms at the threads themselves as they tighten. A straight tap relies on a separate sealing method, typically a sealing washer or an O-ring at the face, to keep things from leaking. Permco builds this one at 1-1/16 inch with a 12-thread pitch, which is a common sizing in medium to heavy hydraulic pump and motor applications.
