we run a paper mill setup and been looking at directional control valves for a while now -- does this Vickers unit use Buna-N seals or something else?

Buna-N seals are what come standard on this valve. For paper mill environments that's a pretty common and practical choice, since Buna-N holds up well against the hydraulic fluids typically used in those settings.
