flow rate on this one is listed at 40 LPM -- is that enough for most press and machine tool setups, or is it more of a light-duty rating?

For most machine tool and press applications, 40 litres per minute is a solid working flow rate. It sits right in the range where single-stage directional valves like this one handle the majority of standard circuit demands without being oversized. The DG4V-3 series was built with exactly those environments in mind, so you're not pushing the valve beyond its design intent in either of those applications.
