Can this handle hydraulic fluid with a lil grit in it, or do I need to be real careful about filtration?

Designed with Buna-N seals, this valve offers good compatibility with standard hydraulic fluids. However, abrasive contaminants can still cause premature wear. Keeping your system clean will definitely extend its service life.
