flow rate on this thing tops out at 40 litres per minute, that enough for most press and machine tool setups, or is that on the low end?

For the majority of press and machine tool applications, 40 litres per minute sits right in the working range. Those circuits rarely demand extreme flow, and this valve handles the directional switching duties without being the bottleneck. Where you'd start pushing limits is in high-speed, high-volume systems designed around much larger actuators. For standard industrial machine tool or press work, 40 LPM is a practical and commonly specified capacity.
