flow rate on this valve tops out at 40 litres per minute, that enough for most press or machine tool setups running standard hydraulic circuits?

For the majority of press and machine tool applications running on conventional hydraulic circuits, 40 litres per minute covers a solid range of operating demands. Where this valve really earns its keep is in systems that need reliable directional switching without oversizing the valve stack. If your circuit is already engineered around that flow range, you should be in good shape.
