cast iron on these vane pumps, does that hold up alright running power steering applications day in and day out?

Cast iron is a solid choice for exactly that kind of work. It handles the pressure and heat cycles that come with continuous power steering duty a lot better than aluminum housings tend to. The 2520VQ series was built with longer operating life as a core design priority, so the material choice lines up with that goal. Buna-N seals are in there as well, which hold up well across a range of fluid conditions you'd typically see in power steering and light industrial setups.
