what exactly is a bearing cup, and is that the same thing as a bearing race?

A bearing cup is the outer ring component of a tapered roller bearing assembly. The rollers sit against it, and it works together with a cone (the inner race) to handle load. So yes, in common shop talk, the cup is the outer race.
